London, Aug. 26 : England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Giles Clarke has warned that he may soon wield the axe on counties to end what he termed cricket overkill at the domestic level.
"We’re looking at a reduction in the amount of domestic cricket. We can’t play three games a week any more. Some tough decisions need to be made, and given the financial situation, next summer could be a dangerous time for the counties. Above all, we need a coherent schedule," Sky News quoted Clarke, as saying.
This will be heartening news for those long-suffering spectators who have complained about a bewildering fixtures list.
It will also please the players themselves, although Clarke issued a warning for those expecting drastic cuts.
"If you reduce the amount of cricket, there will be redundancies. Those who call for less cricket need to understand this. That is the balancing act facing us. It’s a stark choice," he said.
While the planned restructuring of the county game for next season will be debated by the ECB shortly, it seems plans to revive Test cricket with an inaugural world championship are now far advanced.
"I''m optimistic that it will happen," Clarke said. (ANI)
