London, Feb 2 : John Terry's future as captain of England's football team hung in the balance Tuesday after damaging allegations that he made a teammate's former girlfriend pregnant.
The Times said Terry was "agonising over his position" as captain after discussions Monday night with Franco Baldini, general manager of the England team and deputy to manager Fabio Capello.
The Chelsea defender Friday failed in a bid to suppress allegations about his private life after a court overturned an injunction.
British newspapers said Terry was alleged to have had an extramarital affair with Vanessa Perroncel, the former partner of Terry's England and one-time Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge.
Terry is alleged to have got the French lingerie model pregnant and to have arranged for an abortion, The Times reported Tuesday.
Terry, 29, has been given compassionate leave by his club Chelsea and The Sun said he planned to fly to Dubai to be with his wife Toni, who flew out Saturday with their three-year-old twins in a bid to escape the media glare.
The Sun quoted a friend of Toni as saying: "It's the perfect place for her to escape and clear her head."
The Times said Terry had been advised not to rush into a decision after telling friends he could no longer face being part of the same England squad as Wayne Bridge.
British Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said the allegations "called into question" Terry's position, but England's Football Association (FA) is reported to have said that Capello alone will decide Terry's future.(IANS)
