England end season with Trinidad win

London  - England rounded off their season with a 3-0 friendly victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain Sunday.

Portsmouth forward Jermain Defoe scored twice after Gareth Barry had put England ahead with his first goal for his country.

With the home side's marking distinctly lax, it was all very easy for England, probably rather too easy for coach Fabio Capello to make any meaningful judgements.

The greatest long-term significance of the game, in fact, was less to do with England than an injury to Kenwyne Jones.

The Sunderland forward damaged knee ligaments after an early collision with England goalkeeper David James.

Another of Trinidad's Sunderland players, Dwight Yorke, came off the bench with 15 minutes remaining to bid farewell to the international game.

When the sides last met, in Nuremburg in the World Cup in 2006, it took England 83 minutes to find the net, but on this occasion they took the lead after just 12 minutes.

Downing chipped the ball forward for Wayne Bridge, and when he hooked it across goal, Barry ran on to smash his first international goal.

The Middlesbrough winger played his part in the second as well, laying in Defoe to score with a calm finish across goalkeeper Clayton Ince three minutes later.

Defoe added his second four minutes after half-time as a David Bentley cross was only half cleared. (dpa)
