London. Dec 7 (ANI): The Football Association (FA) has reportedly chosen former skipper David Beckham as the face of England in its bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
According to the Daily Express, the former Manchester United winger has agreed to an approach by ex-Sports Minister Richard Caborn to front England’s 2018 bid.
Caborn, who is now the Government’s 2018 bid spokesman, sounded out Beckham in the summer after being impressed by the player’s role in the Olympic bid for 2012. It was a chance meeting, but Beckham gave an immediate pledge to help the cause, the paper said.
The report went on to say that Caborn was with Beckham at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix as guests of Bernie Ecclestone – and it was there that the pitch was made. And, Beckham’s response to this was an emphatic ‘Yes’.
“I’d love England to win the bid, and I would do anything I could to help, ” Beckham was quoted, as telling Caborn.
It is now likely that Beckham, who has been left marooned on 99 international caps after the sacking of manager Steve McClaren, is all set to make his 100th appearance in the friendly against Switzerland in February next year. (ANI)
