England’s `confused’ selection led to defeat against Proteas: Michael Vaughan

London, July 22 : England cricket captain Michael VaughanEngland cricket captain Michael Vaughan has said a ''confused'' selection policy led to his team’s defeat in the second Test against South Africa at the Headingley cricket ground.

South Africa coasted to a 10-wicket win in the Test and leads the four match series 1-0.

And after the bizarre call-up of Aussie roofer Darren Pattinson, Vaughan said: "It does look like a confused selection. The selection of one person doesn''t lose a Test match, but the changes did unsettle us.

"Players were out of position, we left out Paul Collingwood and it has an effect. We should have been able to cope, but I will be sitting down this week and discussing where I think we can improve,” The Sun quoted Vaughan, as saying.

"We do have to pick a team that we think can compete and be better balanced," he added.

England had gone a record six Tests without changing their side before out-of-form Collingwood was axed and key bowler Ryan Sidebottom missed out with a back injury.

Vaughan added: "We didn''t feel as much of a unit this week as we had done the week before. That is something I always have a big belief in, being a unit and having a real togetherness.”

"Darren has been given a lot of criticism. It isn''t his fault. He got selected and he turned up and tried his guts out. I felt sorry for him. He hasn''t been in the set-up, around the environment and he didn''t know anyone,” Vaughan said.

The battle between the two sides resumes at Edgbaston next Wednesday with Vaughan knowing he and coach Peter Moores cannot get it wrong again.

Proteas skipper Graeme Smith said: "Edgbaston offers us the opportunity to close the series out. (ANI)
