London, Jan 14 : Wayne Rooney, told Darron Gibson to take the advantage of joining Everton, before asking for a Blues shirt for his kid Kai.
Gibson is set for his Everton debut at Aston Villa on Saturday, Jan 14 after agreeing a 2-million-pound switch from Manchester United.
The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international joined United at 15 and played in last season’s Champions League semi-final win over Schalke.
But he accepted his United days were over when Sir Alex Ferguson advised him to move on in the summer.
He came close to joining Sunderland at the start of the season but has now made the switch to Goodison, partly thanks to the advice of former Everton man Rooney.
“I spoke to him last week. He said he loved his time here, he loved the club and the players,” the Daily Star quoted Gibson as saying.
“He said it was a great club, the fans were great.
“He has asked me to get a shirt with his name on it, actually for his son!
“I’m 24 and I think I need to be playing as many games as I can, nearly every week, really.
“I wasn’t getting a chance at United.
“I was playing games here and there, which I wasn’t really enjoying.
“It was time for me to move on.”
Gibson can’t wait to grab his chance of regular action before Euro 2012.
He insists that he was not hurt by Fergie’s decision to wheel Paul Scholes out of retirement rather than give him a look-in.
“It was a bit disappointing but I knew before that it was time for me to move on,” he said.
“Scholesy coming back didn’t affect me much.
“The thing that wasn’t enjoyable was playing one week then being left out for five or six games.
“I’ve been a Man United fan since I was young.
“If you had asked me that question last year, I would have said, ‘Yeah, it does hurt,’ but not now.
“I have realised for quite a bit that I needed to leave. It will be nice to know that (David Moyes) wants me to play every week and that he believes in me,” he added. (ANI)
