FIFA president Joseph Blatter wants 6+5 rule only with EU approval

FIFA president Joseph Blatter wants 6+5 rule only with EU approval Brussels  - The president of football's controlling body FIFA Joseph Blatter said Monday he would only push for the implementation of the 6+5 rule with EU approval.

If implemented the rule will enforce clubs to play no more than five players who are not eligible for the national team of the country in which the club is registered.

The EU has said that it regards the rule, which is to be implemented 2012, not to conform to EU regulations.

Blatter, who met with EU officials in Brussels on Monday, said that he "would never push for a decision which did not respect laws."

He added, however, that laws could be interpreted and changed individually.

Blatter said that the Olympic movement and other sports federations were supportive of FIFA in this matter. (dpa)
