Bastad (Sweden), July 7 : In what is believed to be a first in women’s professional tennis, Frenchwoman Alize Cornet caused a brief disruption in her first-round match against World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki at the Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden, because her mobile phone was ringing.
Wozniacki, leading 6-4, 5-3, had match point and was about to serve when she heard the ringing and stopped.
Normally it is a member of the crowd who would forget to put their phone on silent, and initially the players thought it was the fault someone in the stands.
However, Cornet realized that she was the culprit and ran to her kitbag to switch off the device, Fox Sports reports.
The 69th-ranked player in the world ended up winning the game to stay alive, but ultimately Wozniacki broke straight back to complete a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Wozniacki was later forced to retire from the tournament with a shoulder injury. (ANI)
