Friedrich to miss Germany's World Cup qualifying start

Berlin - Germany defender Arne Friedrich has pulled out of next month's World Cup qualifiers to concentrate on achieving full fitness with his club.
Friedrich was quoted by German media Wednesday as saying he had reached agreement with Germany coach Joachim Loew on an individual fitness programme to help him recover fully from a lower back injury.
The 29-year-old Hertha Berlin defender will miss Germany's opening two World Cup qualifying matches in Liechtenstein on September 6 and Finland on September 10.
Friedrich missed much of pre-season training but is back in the Hertha side and is expected to play in Thursday's UEFA Cup qualification-round match at home to Slovenian side NK Ljubljana. (dpa)
