German cyclist Schumacher faces tough sanctions, says BDR

Frankfurt - German cyclist Stefan Schumacher faces tough sanctions including a lifetime ban from the German cycling federation BDR, its president, Rudolf Scharping, said Friday.

It follows confirmation on Wednesday from the BDR that Schumacher had tested positive for the latest generation of the blood booster EPO, known as CERA, at new examinations of samples from last year's Beijing Olympics.

"We will exhaust the whole range (of sanctions): a lifetime exclusion from the BDR, a claim for damages and the bringing of charges against the persons behind this," Scharping said.

The BDR president said first it would have to be seen if Schumacher requests the opening of the B sample.

Almost two months ago Schumacher was banned for two years by the world governing body UCI for being caught using CERA in retests of samples from the 2008 Tour de France.

His lawyer, Michael Lehner, said he would be looking into the possibility that traces of CERA were still in his system at the Beijing Games, although Schumacher denies doping at the Tour.

Schumacher, 28, has not commented on the Beijing retests but is appealing the UCI ruling before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

At the 2008 Tour he won both individual time trials and wore the overall leader's yellow jersey for two days at the famous French race.

He also has two Giro d'Italia stage wins from 2006 and came third in the 2007 world championship road race in Stuttgart.

Two other former Gerolsteiner riders have been implicated with CERA doping.

Italy's Davide Rebellin is among the six Olympic suspects while the original third-place 2008 Tour finisher Bernhard Kohl of Austria was banned for two years and confessed to doping since 2005.

Rebellin, 37, road race silver medallist in Beijing, has asked for his B sample to be tested.

On Thursday, Italy's financial police raided Rebellin's home in northern Italy, as well as his in-laws' house and the office of a doctor, Italian media reported.

A hearing on Rebellin's case due for Monday has been postponed, with the results from the B sample due on May 28. (dpa)
