Beijing - World champions Germany dealt an early double blow to New Zealand Tuesday on their way to joining Australia and the Netherlands in the men's hockey semi-finals with a 3-1 win as final pool matches got under way.
Timo Wess and Matthias Witthaus found the net in the 5th and 9th minutes. Hayden Shaw pulled one back after the break for the Kiwis, before Florian Keller wound things up for the Germans.
Their opponents in the semi-finals depend on the results of later matches including that between fellow pool A sides Spain and South Korea, who were fighting for the pool's other semi-finals place.
The Netherlands meanwhile beat Pakistan 4-2 in the day's other early match, leaving them for the moment top of Pool B. A win for Australia over Great Britain later would leave the defending champions atop that pool.
Pakistan, who ended the pool stage with two wins and three defeats, took a 1-0 lead into the break through Muhammad Imran, but then succumbed to two from Dutch penalty corners specialist Taeke Taekama and one each from Matthis Brouwer and Jeroen Hatzberger. Adnan Maqsood scored Pakistan's second. (dpa)
