Beijing - Cao Lei of China set new Olympic records in the snatch and clean and jerk on her way to gold in the women's weightlifting 75-kilogram division Friday at the BUAA Gymnasium in Beijing.
The 2007 world champion Cao claimed victory thanks to lifts of 128kg in the snatch and 154kg in the clean and jerk for an Olympic record total of 282kg.
Alla Vazhenina of Kazakhstan, runner-up to Cao in this year's Asian championships, took silver with a total of 266kg thanks to 119kg in the snatch and 147kg in the clean and jerk.
Bronze went to Russia's Nadezda Evstyukhina, who lifted 117kg in the snatch and 147kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 264kg.
The men's 85kg competition was set for later Friday. (dpa)
