London, Feb 22 : Golfing legend Gary Player has praised US Open champion Rory Mcllroy and termed him as `the perfect role model' for the age of austerity. Player said Mcllroy has the same talent as his great rivals Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. He also described Mcllroy as the perfect ambassador for the sport during the economic crisis. Player said:
"He is so good for golf. He has so much talent. I have never seen anybody with more talent and I have played with some great players. It is remarkable. If he can get his putting to match the rest of his game, they will all be playing for second. I would not be surprised if he is world No. 1 by the end of the year." "But he is also such a nice young man.
You can see with his parents that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I have met his father (Gerry) in South Africa and he is a real gentleman,' The Mirror quoted him, as saying. Player has been particularly impressed by Mcllroy's mannerism. "But Rory is a role model for these times - he is modest and polite.
Modern players have to have a sense of responsibility to the game and to the public," he added. "And that is what Rory has got. It is going to be so interesting watching him. He is going to be one of those people who stick out," he said. McIlroy started 2012 with top five finishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai and now plays his first event in the United States in Arizona. (ANI)
