Hamburg - Bundesliga leaders SV Hamburg enjoyed a 2-1 away to Slovak side Zilina Thursday in their opening group match Thursday in the UEFA Cup while under-fire Tottenham Hotspur boss Juande Ramos saw his side go down to Udinese.
First half goals from Croatian internationals Mladen Petric and Ivica Olic put the German side in control in the Group F game against the Slovak league leaders who pulled one goal back 21 minutes from time through Emil Rilke.
The only negative incident for Martin Jol's side came when Thimothee Atouba had to leave the field 10 minutes from time with an Achilles tendon problem.
"We are happy that we won even if we lost control near the end," said Jol. "The news about Atouba is very bitter. We will be without him for a month."
Fellow Bundesliga side Schalke 04 celebrated a comfortable 3-1 win over Paris St Germain in their opening Group A encounter in Gelsenkirchen.
Schalke got off to a perfect start when Larrys Mabiala put into his own goal after 12 minutes and striker Kevin Kuranyi made it 2-0 six minutes before the break.
Kuranyi set up Halil Altintop for Schalke's third after 69 minutes before Clement Chantome pulled one back for the visitors in added time.
Tottenham Hotspur's miserable season continued as the English Premier League's bottom club went down 2-0 to Udinese in Group D.
Antonio Di Natale opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes fouled Fabio Quagliarella and the London club were reduced to 10 men on 57 minutes when Jamie O'Hara was sent off after being booked twice inside a minute.
Simone Pepe secured the win for the Serie A side with a cool finish four minutes from time.
In other action, two goals from Alan Dzagoev and a late effort from Vasil Berezutski helped CSKA Moscow beat Deportivo La Coruna 3-0 in Group H. (dpa)
