Hong Kong - Hong Kong's Olympic team returned home empty-handed from Beijing Wednesday with its president calling on the government of the former British colony to invest more in athletics.
The 33-member Hong Kong team, which was welcomed home by chief executive Donald Tsang at a reception Wednesday morning, did not win a single medal in its 10 events at the Beijing Olympics.
Hong Kong Olympic Committee president Timothy Fok said more government funding of sports was needed in the city of 6.9 million, which hosted the Olympics equestrian events.
"I met the British team and they told me they had done very well," he said. "They had the best cycling team and they have a lot of gold medals.
"We work hard, but resources are important," Fok said. "Many other (athletes) need support. That is something we have to review."
The reception for the Hong Kong team was low-key compared to the huge welcome China's Olympic gold medalists are expected to receive when they visit the city on Friday.
Some 24,000 tickets have been snapped up by people eager to get close to the homegrown stars of Beijing's Olympics including gymnast Yang Wei and diving pair Guo Jingjing and Wu Minxia.
Hong Kong, which reverted to Chinese rule in 1997, has competed in 12 Olympic Games and won a gold medal in windsurfing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and a silver medal in table tennis at the 2004 Athens games. (dpa)
