Keita becomes Barcelona's first summer signing

KeitaMadrid  - Troubled Spanish football giants Barcelona on Monday announced the signing of Mali midfielder Seydou Keita.

Barca will pay around 14 million euros (22.07 million dollars) to Sevilla for Keita, which is the buyout fee stipulated in his Sevilla contract.

According to Spanish law, every labour contract needs to have a buyout fee, and this is increasingly used by players to switch clubs.

Keita, 28, agreed to a four-year contract as Barca's first summer signing.

But Sevilla appeared to be displeased at the way that Barca have snatched Keita away from them, without agreeing on a transfer fee.

This displeasure could be an obstacle to Barca signing Sevilla right-back Daniel Alves, another player on the lengthy wanted list of new coach Josep Guardiola.

Keita joined Sevilla from French club Lens in July 2007 and was an instant success at the Estadio Sanchez Pzjuan, with his hard work in midfield and his powerful left-foot shots.

He started 28 Liga matches for Sevilla, who finished sixth last season, scoring four goals. (dpa)
