Dortmund, Germany - Former Mainz 05 coach Juergen Klopp has been appointed as Borussia Dortmund coach, the Bundesliga club said on Friday.
Dortmund, who finished the season in a disappointing 13th place, parted ways with Thomas Doll just four days ago, while Klopp resigned a few days earlier after failing to take Mainz back into the Bundesliga.
The 40-year-old Klopp has signed a two-year contract with the former Champions League winners.
"It is obviously a great honour to be Dortmund coach and help them get back to where they belong. I am looking forward to doing that," he said.
Klopp, who will be joined at Dortmund by his co-coach Zeljko Buvac, is the third coach at Dortmund within the last 18 months.
Although there have long been rumours that Klopp was going to take over Dortmund after the club was beaten in the German cup final by Bayern Munich, Dortmund official Hans-Joachim Watzke said that they had first spoken to Klopp on Monday.
"We only spoke to him. I am looking forward to the start of a new exciting phase of the club."
Like his predecessor Doll, Klopp has little experience coaching at the highest level. He took over Mainz in 2001 and after twice failing to gain promotion managed to do so in 2004, but was relegated three years later. (dpa)
