Latif backs ‘quota system’ in Pak cricket

Latif backs ‘quota system’ in Pak cricketKarachi, Feb. 12 : Former Pakistan wicket keeper Rashid Latif has criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board’s selection procedure, saying many talented young players were being wasted due the power struggle between the four provinces of the country.

Latif backed the idea of having a quota system to overcome the unjust selection process, and utilise the maximum available talent.

“Pakistan comprises four provinces which are rich with natural talent. However, only few cities are being focused while selecting national players, which is unfortunate. If countries like South Africa and India can practice it, why can’t we apply it in Pakistan?” Latif said.

Latif said the quota system should not be limited to players only, rather it should also be extended to the team officials, as it would help from different regions to ‘serve the nation.’

Commenting on the wide spread demand for changing the whole PCB set up and removing the captain following the team’s dismal performance Down Under, Latif said it was important to change the approach with which the Pakistan cricket is being run.

The former captain said axing the skipper or sacking the PCB chief would not help resolve the real issues confronting the game in the country.

“The approach is the only thing that needs to be changed. We have had many captains and chairmen in the past ten years but the performance of the team has not improved. On the other hand Australia has been consistent in this regard because they have a good system in place,” The Daily Times quoted Latif, as saying. (ANI)
