London - Liverpool have made a 10 million-pound offer for Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry, the Liverpool Echo newspaper said on Friday.
The offer was reportedly made on Thursday, the day after Liverpool's semi-final defeat by Chelsea in the Champions League.
The 27-year-old Barry, an England international, who has two years of his contract to run at Villa, has made no secret of his desire to play Champions League football.
Liverpool will be in the competition again next season after securing fourth spot.
The news will heighten speculation that midfielder Xabi Alonso, who has been linked with a return to Spain with Real Madrid or Barcelona, could leave the club in the summer. (dpa)
