London, Jan 30 : Chelsea star John Terry faces being dumped as England’s World Cup captain after his affair with team-mate Wayne Bridge’s girlfriend was exposed.
In a poll of 2,000 supporters, 87 per cent called for Terry to be axed as captain.
Coach Fabio Capello was last night said to be “incandescent” as shattered Bridge told pals that he did not even want to be picked for England’s next friendly match in March.
The Sun reports that after the affair came to light Wayne is refusing to talk to the Three Lions skipper any more, and he is considering quitting international football entirely.
The Football Association is already split on whether Terry should go.
Chief executive Ian Watmore believes the decision should be left to Capello and that FA suits should not interfere.
Capello is fuming that if he includes both players in his squad, and Bridge agrees to don the England shirt, he faces a headache over whether they can be on the pitch at the same time.
“Fabio is spitting mad. He doesn’t want anything to derail the team’s preparation in the run up to the tournament in South Africa. His view is that footballers should be seen and not heard,” The Sun quoted a FA source, as saying.
“John’s personal life is taking the focus away from what’s really important - England winning the World Cup,” the source said.
The source said: “Fabio and the other England officials will now be considering what to do with John. Many believe he simply cannot go on playing as captain. Wayne is rightly upset that Terry’s betrayal has become public knowledge. (ANI)
