Mexican striker de Nigris dies of heart defect

Mexico City/Athens  - Mexican striker Antonio de Nigris has died of a heart attack at the age of 31, Mexican media reported Monday citing members of his family.

De Nigris of Greek club AE Larissa was taken early Monday to Larissa's University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Greek pathologist Christos Kravaritis confirmed the death due to a heart defect, following an initial post-mortem examination, the Mexican newspaper El Universal reported late Monday on its website.

De Nigris played 17 times for Mexico's national team, scoring four goals. He began his playing career with his home club club Monterrey before spells in Colombia at Once Caldas, Brazilian side Santos, Villarreal in Spain and for several clubs in Turkey.

His congenital heart defect had reportedly first been diagnosed in Turkey during his time playing there. (dpa)
