Berlin, Jan 21 : Borussia Monchengladbach inflicted a crushing 3-1 defeat on the German record champion and Bundesliga Football League leaders Bayern Munich at a sold-out Borussia Park.
Host Borussia Monchengladbach started Friday's game with an early goal in the 11th minute to shock the guest from Munich, as midfielder Marco Reus capitalised on a misplaced pass by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to slot home the opener.
Five minutes before interval Monchengladbach doubled the lead with midfielder Patrick Herrmann finishing a quick counter-attack to shock Bayern.
The home team defended bravely and looked for counter attacks in the second half as Bayern seemed absolutely unimaginative. Borussia midfielder Herrmann sealed his brace when he again finished a fast break, in the 71st minute to wrap a sensational and unexpected victory.
Bayern was able to score the consolation goal in the 76th minute when midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger hammered home through a corner from the left wing.
"We played very well. We were compact, which made it difficult for Bayern," Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
"The first goal was unnecessary. The crucial point was the 2-0 before interval," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said.
Bayern stays on top of the standings with 37 points while Monchengladbach jumps from fourth to second position on 36 points. (IANS)
