New PCB chief Ashraf ‘in court trouble’ barely days after appointment

New PCB chief Ashraf ‘in court trouble’ barely days after appointment Islamabad, Oct 15 : A petition against the newly-appointed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Zaka Ashraf, has been accepted by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Federal Government after accepting the plea against Ashraf for illegal appointments at Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), The Express Tribune reports.

The petitioner stated that Ashraf had made illegal appointments during his tenure as ZTBL president.

Citing an internal ZTBL audit report, the petition highlights 32 cases of inappropriate appointments.

President Asif Ali Zardari had earlier approved the appointment of Ashraf as PCB chief. Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar had said that the appointment would take place with effect the day Ashraf relinquishes charge as ZTBL president.

There were doubts surrounding Ashraf’s appointment soon after the decision was made to name him as Ijaz Butt’s successor, with a Supreme Court case against the former Pakistan Sugar Mills Association chairman reportedly stopping him from taking office.

The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association chairman had reportedly stopping him from taking office, however, officials in the presidency had confirmed that Ashraf’s appointment would go ahead as planned, once his successor at ZTBL was named, the report said. (ANI)
