New points system will encourage F1 drivers to aim for win

New points system will encourage F1 drivers to aim for winLondon, Jan. 26 : A new points system will encourage Formula One drivers to battle flat out for a win rather than settle for a "safe" second place.

According to The Sun, the winner of a Grand Prix will get 25 points this season - seven more than the runner-up - in a bid to spice up the action.

The new system, approved by F1''s think-tank the Sporting Working Group, will also reward all those who finish in the top ten.

The full scoring will be: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.

The structure still needs to be approved by next month''s meeting of the Formula 1 Commission before it can be introduced into the 2010 regulations.

But this is likely to be a formality as the teams have already voted in favour of the changes.

Red Bull''s team principal Christian Horner said drivers would have to "go for it" rather than cruise to collect points.

It is believed the think-tank rejected suggestions of awarding further points for pole position and fastest lap.

The possibility of a rule forcing drivers to make least two pit stops during a race was discussed but not approved.

They will therefore only need to make a single stop to ensure they run on both types of the two tyre compounds in use at each Grand Prix. (ANI)
