Abuja - Nigerian was full of long faces on Saturday as the West African nation's dream of picking up a gold medal in the Olympics was dashed by Argentina in the football final.
Many Nigerians who got up in the early hours to watch the match said it was not worth the effort, and blame was thrown at coach Samson Siasia for not fielding Everton's Victor Anichebe from the start.
"Messi messed Nigeria," was one spectator's verdict, referring to Argentina's star player Lionel Messi, while others bemoaned the performance of the referee and missed chances in the game.
However, many took the result on chin and were happy that Nigeria footballers were at least bringing home a silver - the only medal for Africa's most populous nation at the Olympics.
"Thank God we got the silver, though we went for the gold," Dr. Rauf Gbadamosi, president of the Nigerian Football Supporters Club, told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
"The coach did well and the boys need encouragement. We will go back to the drawing board and prepare for the World Cup." (dpa)
