Imphal, Sept 17 : Archer Bombyala Devi, who represented India at the London Olympics this year, is all set to start an archery training school in Manipur.
Speaking to reporters, Bombayala, who started practicing with bamboo bows at an early age due to a paucity of resources, said, "I am planning to start an archery coaching academy in Manipur to train talented youth. Today, I have sponsors and money to start such an institution."
Following her success at various national and international events, youth from the region are taking up sports as a career.
"After the success of sportspersons from the northeast in different international events, youth from the region are taking up sports as a career, and I think, both the state and the central government should support them," she said.
Her journey to the top is full of struggle.
She was initially trained by her mother and later by the Sports Authority of India.
Acknowledging her success and recent Arjuna award, Bombyala's mother said, "I am so happy that my daughter has been conferred with the Arjuna award. I think she moved to a higher level from state to national, and then to Olympics. She is doing very well."
Bombyala Devi lost to Mexican Roman Aida in pre-quarterfinals of the London Olympics in the singles event, but she has not lost hope.
She is working hard to hone her skills, and the Archery Federation has assured her of helping her train abroad to provide greater exposure for international competitions. (ANI)
