Vienna - Media in the European Union should publish tables adding up all EU medals won in the Beijing Olympics in order to create a feeling of European identity, the European Commission's representative in Austria said Tuesday.
If all the EU members' medals in the 2004 summer Olympics in Athens were added up, the EU would have a better count than the United States, Russia and China combined, said Georg Dutlik, the head of the Commission's mission in Vienna.
By publishing an EU medals count along with national results, "a certain pride in Europe could be created, and an urgently needed positive perception could arise," Dutlik wrote in a letter to Austrian media.
According to the latest official EU survey, Austrians are among the most EU-sceptical people in Europe.
Dutlik wants to promote his idea among other European Commission representatives and EU officials, he said. (dpa)
