Oz cricket board set to decide on ‘split innings one-day’ format

Oz cricket board set to decide on ‘split innings one-day’ formatSydney, Aug 13 : The proposed split innings in the one-day cricket format will become official if Cricket Australia approves the concept at it board meeting today.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the board is expected to decide whether to introduce changes or put them in mothballs until 2011-12.

The idea to try and revitalise one-day cricket by introducing the new format appeared to be confusing for both players and supporters at a trial game played between state sides South Australia and Tasmania over the weekend.

The decision to change the format is also being criticised as implementing a wildly different limited overs format for domestic cricket will affect 2011 World Cup preparations.

However the board was quite adamant at a meeting in June and said that there is an urgent need for change and innovation.

"In concept there are a number of options on the table and what the board has said, in a broad sense, is that we believe there''s an opportunity here to be innovative,” CA chief executive James Sutherland said in June.

However, many players remain sceptical about the new format.

"It really is completely different from the 50-over game," Australian batsman Callum Ferguson, said.

"Whether we go into the new format is not for me to decide, but with the World Cup coming up it''s probably a big decision and we''ll all be keen to see what the result is. With the timing it could be tough for some players," he added. (ANI)
