PCB removes “useless” Lawson, likely to appoint Intikhab Alam as new coach

PCB removes “useless” Lawson, likely to appoint Intikhab Alam as new coachLahore, Oct 25 : The PCB has sacked team coach Geoff Lawson and chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi. Only a couple of days ago, Board chief Ijaz Butt had described Lawson as a “useless” coach, and that it was not possible to sack him before his two-year term ends as it would put a huge financial burden on the Board.

Confirming his removal, a PCB spokesman said: “Lawson has been given three months’ pay as compensation.”

Now, the PCB is likely to appoint former Test captain Intikhab Alam as the new coach for the one-day series in Abu Dhabi against the West Indies from November 12. “I would be willing to consider a coaching position if they approach me,” the Daily Times quoted Intikhab, a member of the PCB governing board, as telling reporters.

50-year-old Lawson, a former Australian Test fast bowler, was appointed the national team’s coach in July last year after Pakistan’s first-round defeat in the World Cup in the West Indies.

On the other hand, Lawson said he was surprised at the decision. “I have been told about their decision but there are a few issues to be sorted out,” he told reporters.

Calls for Lawson’s removal intensified when Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka in the final of the Twenty20 four-nation event in Canada earlier this month.

The Board spokesman also said that the PCB governing board had passed a resolution for Naghmi’s removal. “Naghmi has been informed by the governing board that his services are no longer required,” he added. (ANI)
