London, Dec 19 : American swimmer Michael Phelps had a mixed first outing in Britain at the Duel in the Pool in front of a sell-out crowd in Manchester on Friday.
Phelps, swimming in England for the first time, took part in three events– the 4x100m medley relay, the 100m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.
The 14-time Olympic champ won the 100m in the butterfly, coming from behind in the last length to the delight of the crowd to win it by just 0.05 sec.
In the 100 metres freestyle, he came in third behind fellow American Nathan Adrian and Italy''s Marco Orsi.
“I always like to make it close. But everything''s a stepping stone to London 2012 and this is a good way to start,” The Sun quoted Phelps, as saying.
Phelps also helped the United States team win the 4x100m medley relay in a world record 3:23.33.
The superstar swimmer was wearing the 2010 suit while his rivals opted for the super-fast skin-suits that will be outlawed from next month. (ANI)
