Rome - Former 100 metres world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica had a groin scare on Friday at the Golden League stop in Rome while Kenyan teenager Pamela Jelimo remained in the hunt for a million-dollar jackpot at the elite athletics series.
According to Powell's manager Paul Doyle, the star runner's groin cramped up during the 100m heat in which he came fifth.
He qualified for the final but did not run as "a precaution" with just five weeks left until the Olympic 100m races in Beijing, Doyle said.
Powell has been troubled by groin problems before. He held the world record of 9.74 seconds until compatriot Usain Bolt bettered the mark to 9.72 on May 31.
Jelimo, 18, meanwhile, got her third 800m win in as many Golden League events, winning in 1 minute 55.69 seconds from world champion compatriot Janeth Jepkosgei
(1:58.74) and Yulia Krevsun of Ukraine (1:58.75).
Athletes who win their event at all six Golden League meets are eligible for the one-million-dollar jackpot. Four other athletes could also remain in the race with wins in Rome later Friday. (dpa)
