Queiroz appointed Portugal coach

Queiroz appointed Portugal coachLisbon  - Carlos Queiroz was on Friday appointed Portugal coach in succession of Luis Felipe Scolari, the nation's football federation FPF announced.

Queiroz, 55, takes the position on a four-year contract until 2012 and is due to be officially presented on Wednesday. He also coached Portugal 1991-1994.

Queiroz was assistant coach under Sir Alex Ferguson at European Champions League holders and Premier League champions Manchester United the past four seasons.

He also coached Real Madrid for one season 2003/2004 and South Africa 2000-2002.

Scolari ended his Portugal job after Euro 2008 to move on to England as Chelsea manager. He was at the Portugal helm since 2003.

Queiroz' departure from United to his home country could possibly also have an impact on compatriot winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

The two reportedly had a close relationship and Ronaldo has not hidden his desire to join Spanish champions Real Madrid. Real have been after Ronaldo for weeks but United have declared him not for sale. (dpa)
