Ukrainian lifter fails doping test, kicked out of Olympics

Beijing - Ukrainian weightlifter Igor Razoronov was disqualified and kicked out of the Beijing Olympics over a positive doping test for steroids, the International Olympic Committee said on Saturday.

Razoronov, 38, tested positive for the steroid nandrole on August 18 after placing sixth in the 105-kilos division.  Read more »

CAS turns down protests over Danish sailing victory

Beijing - The ad hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Beijing turned down Saturday protests by Spain and Italy over the decision to award the 49er category sailing gold medal to Jonas Warrer and Martin Ibsen.

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) and the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) took the move after having two protests against the decision to allow the Danish pair to keep their medals - despite borrowing a boat Sunday for their final race - turned down by the International Sailing Federation's (ISAF) international jury.  Read more »

The man from the stadium who nearly stole the show

Beijing - The man standing on the pitch and watching from afar the medal ceremony after Argentina defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the final of the Olympic football tournament could have been anybody.

Wearing short pants, a sleeveless blue shirt and shoes without socks, the slightly overweight stocky man held his hands clasped behind his back, a plastic bag stuck between his right arm and body.

He looked as if he had just walked off a beach and by mistake ended up on the football pitch in Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium.  Read more »

Russia secures third synchronized swimming gold in a row

Beijing - Russia's synchronized swimming team collected their third Olympic gold medal in succession Saturday at a sold-out National Aquatics Centre in Beijing.

Anastasia Ermakova and Anastasia Davidova, winners of the duet gold three days ago, led their team to victory with a total of 99.500 points.

European champion Spain took silver with 98.251 points while China claimed bronze to register their first medal in the event since its introduction at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. (dpa)

Beijing - Ken Wallace of Australia took gold in the men's K1 500-metre kayak Ken Wallace takes men's K1 500m kayak gold for Australia race at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park Saturday, coming from behind to finish ahead of Canada's Adam van Koeverden.

Wallace trailed defending Olympic champion van Koeverden at the halfway stage but finished the stronger to claim victory in a time of 1 minute 37.252 seconds.  Read more »

Great Britain beat South Korea for 5th place as Germans face Spain

Beijing - Great Britain beat South Korea 5-2 to secure fifth place on the final day of the Olympic men's hockey tournament Saturday as Spain and Germany prepared for the final.

All goals fell in the second half as a brace from Jonty Clarke proved the British turning point after opening goals from Barry Middleton and Jang Jong Hyun.

Further British goals came from Ashley Jackson and Glenn Kirkham, while Hyun Hye Sung got the Koreans' second.  Read more »

Overseas Uighur group fears "fierce" repression after Olympics

Beijing - A US-based group of exiled Uighurs issued a statement Saturday saying it feared the Chinese government will launch a "fierce" repression of Uighurs in its northwestern Xinjiang region after the Olympics.

The Uighur American Association (UAA) said recent comments made by top Chinese officials and the tightened restrictions and many arrests following a spate of deadly attacks this month were indications that China may be planning a tough crack down once the Olympics end.  Read more »

Di Maria ensures Argentine football gold, Spitz wins mountain bike

Beijing - Angel Di Maria scored the only goal of the game Saturday as Argentina beat Nigeria to defend their Olympic football title.

Playing in sweltering conditions before a near-capacity 89,000 crowd in Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium, Di Maria scored in the 58th minute off a defence-splitting pass from Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

The Benfica surged at the Nigerian goal and coolly lobbed the ball over advancing goalkeeper goalkeeper Ambrose Vanzekin.  Read more »
