Goktan let go by 1860 Munich for cocaine abuse

Munich - Berkant Goktan has been sacked with immediate notice by his club 1860 Munich after testing positive for cocaine, the German club confirmed Tuesday.

The second division club said it had offered to help Goktan overcome his problems as well as giving the 27-year-old striker the opportunity of letting his contract lapse, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.

Goktan, who joined 1860 Munich in August 2006 on a five-year deal, previously had spells with Kaiserslautern, Besiktas, Galatasaray and Bayern Munich. (dpa)

Munich - Bayern Munich coach Juergen Klinsmann will wait as long as possible before deciding whether striker Luca Toni is fit enough to play against former club Fiorentina in Tuesday's Champions League clash.

Toni is suffering with a rib injury and club doctors will make the final decision within the next 24 hours.

"If we get the green light from the doctors and they give the go ahead then he'll play from the start," said Klinsmann Monday.  Read more »

Hoeness sees German Bundesliga holding firm against global crisis

Munich  - Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness sees the German Bundesliga holding firm against the global economic crisis.

Hoeness was quoted in Friday's edition of the Bild newspaper as saying that German football is well off even though income may drop.

"I believe that German football has less to worry than other countries," said Hoeness.

"The big question, however, is if we are moving into a recession where the advertising spendings drops and companies are less inclined to pay money for sponsorship."  Read more »

Munich chairman Rummenigge calls for patience with coach Klinsmann

Munich - Juergen Klinsmann's job as Bayern Munich coach is not endangered by the latest poor results, chairman Karl-heinz Rummenigge said.

Defying mounting criticism on the former Germany helmsman Klinsmann, Rummenigge insisted in Tuesday's edition of the Bild daily that the club is ready to be patient with Klinsmann after a major structural overhaul.

"We are convinced by Juergen and his philosophy. He is the right coach for us. He is is doing everything right in general, only the results are not the right ones," said Rummenigge.  Read more »

Klinsmann gives skipper van Bommel his backing

Munich  - Bayern Munich coach Juergen Klinsmann Friday gave captain Mark van Bommel a vote of confidence following media reports that his standing in the side is suffering from a rotation policy.

"Mark is our captain and has our complete confidence. He enjoys the team's respect and full recognition," Klinsmann said.

The Dutch midfielder, was appointed captain by Klinsmann at the beginning for the season, but has twice been left out of the side.  Read more »

Bayern's Rummenigge expects England to dominate, warns Bundesliga

Munich - Bayern Munich's Chief Executive Officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said Monday he again expects English clubs to dominate the Champions League, which is starting this week.

He also voiced fears that the Bundesliga would slip further behind.

"The English are, at the moment, ahead of the rest of Europe. Against teams like Manchester, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal the Bundesliga is far behind," he told the German TV station Premiere.  Read more »
