London, Aug. 21 : Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson believes that key striker Wayne Rooney would need to score goals sooner than later, otherwise questions could start doing the rounds.
“I say it time and time again, strikers live by their goals. When they’re not scoring they think it’s never going to come. Then when they do come, they think they’re never going to finish. They’re quite straightforward people in that respect,” The Mirror quoted Ferguson, as saying ahead of the club’s match against Fulham.
“Wayne is no different from any other kind of striker. Wayne has only had an hour’s football this season, against Newcastle, so he needs more game-time. But strikers want to score, there’s no doubt about that. And when they’re not scoring, they think it’s never going to happen for them,” he added.
Commenting on midfielder Anderson, Ferguson said that the 18 million pound star lacked focus, and there were concerns over his attitude and a knee injury.
Fergie suggested this season was likely to be a make-or-break one for the 22-year-old in terms of his Old Trafford future.
“Anderson loves football, he loves training,” said Fergie. “He wants to play every game. But it’s a problem for me because at 22 he hasn’t got that maturity to understand we operate a squad here.
“When he does understand that, he’ll be a fantastic performer. Whether we can change that mentality, it’s difficult to say. I don’t want to change it in some ways, because you do like seeing someone who wants to play all the time,” he added.
He said: “He needs maturity and maybe it’s a good thing he’s been injured for a spell because he can look at his situation. That maybe quelled the storm in his body. He came back here with the same enthusiasm telling me ‘I’m ready, I’m ready’, which is fantastic. (ANI)
