Madrid - Ezequiel Garay is about to sign for Spanish champions Real Madrid.
This is the claim made on Monday morning by Madrid sports papers Marca and AS.
Marca and AS claim that Real will pay around 10 million euros (15.58 million dollars) for the powerful Argentine defender.
Garay, 21, was on the point of signing for Barcelona two months ago, but the Catalan club seemed to think that the price demanded by Santander was excessive.
Barca also had doubts about Garay because of a muscle injury that has kept him out of action since March.
Garay has played only 22 league matches this season for Santander, who on Sunday finished sixth in La Liga, qualifying for the UEFA Cup for the first time ever.
Real are also interested in Martin Caceres of Recreativo Huelva, another promising young Argentine central defender.
According to Marca, the imminent arrival of Garay could lead Real to sell off either Italian veteran Fabio Cannavaro or German defender Christoph Metzelder, who has missed most of the season with a foot injury. (dpa)
