Schalke go top as Hoffenheim slip to first defeat Hamburg  - Schalke moved to the top of the Bundesliga on goal difference after promoted Hoffenheim slid to their first defeat of the season on Saturday.

A Heiko Westermann header in the first half gave Schalke a 1-0 win over VfL Bochum as the Blues bounced back from a 4-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League's last qualifying stage on Wednesday.

Schalke are level on 7 points with SV Hamburg, who came from two goals down for a 4-2 win at Arminia Bielefeld, and Borussia Dortmund, who earned a 1-0 win at Energie Cottbus.

Hoffenheim, who had won their two opening games, suffered a 5-2 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen, while Borussia Moenchengladback earned their first points of the season with a 3-2 victory over Werder Bremen.

Wolfsburg had to be content with a 2-2 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. (dpa)
