Spain will give everything to make it to last four, says Aragones

Spain will give everything to make it to last four, says AragonesVienna  - Spain are prepared to give their all to overcome Italy in Sunday's Euro 2008 quarter-final clash in Vienna, coach Luis Aragones said Saturday at a press conference at the Ernst Happel stadium.

"We are convinced that we can do it and have no doubts. We will give 110 per cent. Positive thinking is called for and that is what this team has," he said.

"If the players have to "die" on the field, they will," he said, pointing out that he was using the world die in inverted commas.

The 69-year-old said he would prepare for the tie in the same way as he would any other match.

"My job is to bring peace of mind. I've got a glass-half-full type of mentality so inside I'm convinced that we are going to progress."

Aragones said he had yet to decide on his starting 11 but that he would not be looking to do a man-marking job on Italy striker Luca Toni, despite admitting that his side sometimes struggled under the long ball.

"This is not because I am not concerned about Toni or our opponent, it's more that my real concern is to ensure that Spain plays the way Spain can," said the veteran coach.

Spain have failed to beat Italy in a competitive match since the Antwerp Olympics in 1920 and have also failed to make it to the final of a major tournament since losing to France in the 1984 European Championship.

However, they have won their last nine matches in a row, including a 1-0 friendly win over Italy last March, and Aragones feels his players have what it takes to put this sorry run behind them.

"We have had a winning dynamic for a year although Italy are winners too," he said.

"But I have a group of players that really deserves to put an end to this (tournament) problem in Spain for once and all." (dpa)
