Srinivasan says BCCI not favouring T20 over Test cricket

Srinivasan says BCCI not favouring T20 over Test cricket

London, Nov 24 : The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) president, Narayanaswami Srinivasan has defended the board over criticism that they are ruining Test cricket by favouring the Twenty20 format.
The editor of Wisden this year accused the BCCI of being driven by the self-interest of the few, while the editor of Newsweek International, Tunku Varadarajan, a fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, wrote this week that the board is vulgar and is ruining the Test cricket by inflicting on it death-by-IPL
It is the Indian Premier League (IPL) that is blamed for the low turnouts at Test matches in India and the reordering of priorities by other nations as they offer their best players to the Twenty20 league in order not to fall out with India, but Srinivasan rejects this notion.
"T20 cricket was not invented by us. The IPL has brought new audience into the game: the housewife and children. It has broadened the viewership base and interest in cricket. But there is still a lot of interest in Test cricket," the Telegraph quoted Srinivasan, as saying.
"I''m an old-timer. To me Test cricket is No. 1. That is personally speaking. If you look at cricket, we now have three products: Tests, ODIs and T20s. If you look at the overall attendances . they have gone up. What people are asking is for maximum attendance for all three versions. It might not happen," he added. (ANI)
