Toronto - Gilles Simon followed up on a knockout this week of Roger Federer to reach his first Masters Series semi-final as he beat Croatian Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a draining victory on Friday.
The Frenchman claimed his ninth consecutive hard court win and is primed for a ranking move as high as the top 15 from his current 22nd, according to ATP calculations.
"I'm tired," confessed last week's Indianapolis champion. "The start of the match was hard for me, Marin played very well. In the second set I just kept fighting on every point."
Simon is chasing the fifth title of his career after stunning Federer in the second round two days ago. He needed nearly two and a half hours to reach the last four, lifting his season record to 30-16.
"It was really hot for me on court, but it was a great fight again, a great match, I'm so happy to be in the semi-finals."
Cilic, 19, had booked his place into the quarters through an upset of Andy Roddick, whose status as American number one is under threat from James Blake, who could claim it with a later win over German Nicolas Kiefer. (dpa)
