Vienna - Sturm Graz fans are to get bodyguards to protect them on future trips to play Eastern European opponents, the resident of the Austrian club, Hans Rimmer, was quoted as saying by the APA news agency Tuesday.
The comment follows an incident involving Graz fans during an Intertoto Cup match away to Hungarian side Honved Budapest last Saturday.
The trouble started when the Austrians went behind after seven minutes and some fans fired flares onto the pitch. Hungarian security officials responded by wading into the part of the stadium where the Graz fans were situated and, according to the club's account, used a completely unacceptable level of force on them.
Nine fans, of whom seven were Austrian, had to be brought to hospital for treatment. The Hungarians denied that they had overreacted at the game but Rinner said the security firm involved also caused headlines in 2002 when there was trouble during a UEFA Cup game between Ferencvaros Budapest and VfB Stuttgart and tear gas and batons were used.
UEFA will discuss the incident in the coming days. (dpa)
