Taiwan hopes to better its Athens Olympics record in Beijing

Taiwan hopes to better its Athens Olympics record in Beijing Taipei  - Taiwan hopes to improve its performance from 2004 in Athens at the upcoming Beijing Games, an Olympic official said on Monday.

"At the 2004 Athens Olympics, we won two gold, two silver and one bronze. I hope our athletes can try their best and better this record at the Beijing Olympics," Chen Kuo-yi, secretary-general of the Chinese-Taipei Olympic Committee, told reporters.

The two 2004 golds were in taekwondo, the silvers in taekwondo and archery, and the bronze in archery.

Taiwan is sending some 80 athletes to compete in 15 sports at the Beijing Games which open on Friday. The biggest gold medal hopes are again in taekwondo and archery, plus the women's doubles in tennis and baseball.

Taiwan is rolling out hefty rewards for its Olympians - from 12 million Taiwan dollars (387,000 US dollars) for a gold medalist to 900,000 Taiwan dollars (29,000 US dollars) for the seventh and eighth place finisher. (dpa)
