Taiwan media hails Olympic opening ceremony

Taiwan media hails Olympic opening ceremony Taipei  - Taiwan media on Saturday hailed the success of the Beijing Olympics' opening ceremony, but a few newspapers were sarcastic.

Most Taiwan newspapers devoted their front pages to the Beijing Olympics' opening ceremony from Friday evening, calling it a success or a miracle.

The headline in the mass-circulation China Times reads: "Beijing Olympics' opening was successful, the fireworks show was dazzling."

The United Daily News printed 14 articles and news reports about the Olympic opening ceremony. One story described: "The most extravagant Olympic opening ceremony, costing an astronomical sum to prepare."

Another story in the United Daily News said: "For the first time in 5,000 years, the Olympics has turned Beijing into the centre of the universe."

Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) had reporters and photographers in Beijing to cover the ceremony.

The Liberty Times did not send reporters to Beijing, but it used a dozen articles and news stories related to the Olympic opening ceremony.

While praising the success of the opening ceremony, the paper pointed out that China still has problems including human rights and censorship.

Some Taiwan newspapers questioned the necessity of spening dollars of dollars to host the Olympics while many Chinese are starving.

Three Taiwan television stations gave live broadcasts of the Olympics' opening ceremony, as millions of Taiwanese stayed home to watch. (dpa)
