London, Feb 6 : Disgraced England captain John Terry stands to lose up to 20 million pounds in commercial deals over the next four years after being axed following revelation of his affair with an ex-girlfriend of left-back Wayne Bridge.
Terry was stripped of the armband and replaced by defender Rio Ferdinand - after a 12-minute meeting with manager Fabio Capello at Wembley on Friday.
Sponsorship experts believe the fall-out from Terry’s affair with Vanessa Perroncel will cost him several lucrative contracts, The Sun reports.
The 29-year-old currently has a four million pound contract to wear Umbro football boots at every match and also appears in adverts for Nationwide building society and electronics giant Samsung.
The bleak forecast comes after American golfer Tiger Woods was estimated to be losing one million dollars a day after sponsors deserted him in the wake of his extra-marital affairs.
“It is slightly different to Tiger Woods who traded so heavily on his clean-cut image and family life - John Terry was never that sort of prospect to commercial backers. But it is difficult to see how this won’t hit him financially,” one sponsorship expert said.
“The commercial advantage of being England captain, which can set you up for life looks to have been lost,” the expert added.
Earlier, in lifting an injunction preventing reports of the alleged affair, the judge had made it clear that he suspected Terry wanted to protect his commercial deals more than anything else. (ANI)
