Bangkok -
An estimated 400,000 Thai teenagers have already bet about 900 million baht (27 million dollars) on the Euro 2008 football tournament with still half the matches to go, a survey found Monday.
The estimates were based on a survey of 2,910 Thais aged 12 to 24 between June 1-14 conducted by the Abac Poll Research Centre, the Bangkok Post newspaper said.
Betting on European football is endemic in Thailand, where football is the national sport and gambling a national pastime.
Of the Thai teens surveyed by Abac, 83.8 per cent said they saw nothing "immoral" about betting on football, and 41.3 per cent admitted they had had little sleep since the start of the tournament, owing to the five-hour time difference with tournament hosts Austria and Switzerland. (dpa)
