London, Dec. 31: Fernando Torres has saved Liverpool''s season and sent out a message to the Premier League''s top-four challengers, believes defender Jamie Carragher.
Torres'' injury-time goal in the 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Tuesday gave the Reds back-to-back wins and put them four points behind fourth-placed Spurs, who travel to Anfield on January 10.
Kop boss Rafa Benitez has already guaranteed a top-four finish this season.
But Carragher believes Liverpool''s chances of a Champions League spot would have been written off if Villa had won.
The Sun quoted the Reds defender, 31, as saying: "We realise what would have happened if we had lost. People would have said we were miles away and that was it for the top four, so we have given ourselves a fighting chance.”
"It was more than just the three points, it was a statement to everyone that we are still fighting for that place. There are always teams wanting to shoot you down. We''ve been up there for a long time,” he added.
“If we can win the next game against Tottenham, that can put us right in the mix,” Carragher said. (ANI)
