Stockholm  - Reigning Olympic triple-jump champion Christian Olsson Tuesday said he would not compete at the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, citing "a muscle injury in the back of a thigh."

The 28-year-old Swede made the announcement after competing at the DN Galan event in Stockholm where he jumped 17.00 metres in his best effort, placing third, before pulling out.

Romania's Marian Oprea won on 17.25 metres.

The "Olympic Games are out," Olsson told Swedish television, saying "it was the same problem I have had before."

"I can't do anything about it. It is a chronic injury," he said.

On the eve of the DN Galan event, Olsson said in several interviews that he felt "nervous" over whether or not he would suffer a new injury or not.

Asked if he would aim for a new comeback, Olsson said he would "consider" his future career, but "perhaps it is not my decision but rather that my body says it can't cope."

Olsson had not competed since June last year and has battled several injuries since winning the Olympic title at the Athens Games in 2004.

In recent weeks he decided to abstain from several competitions over groin pain.

In the main draw, current world 100-metre record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica was defeated by his compatriot, Asafa Powell, the former record holder.

Powell timed 9.88 seconds, while Bolt finished on 9.89 at the event held at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Stadium.

The home crowd was also disappointed when 100-metre hurdler Susanna Kallur pulled out of the race, citing muscle pain during the warm-up.

"It was a precautionary measure," Kallur said, adding "I want to travel to Beijing." (dpa)
