Two injured as violent storm forces Vienna fan zone evacuation

Vienna  - Two fans were seriously injured Wednesday night as a massive thunderstorm forced the evacuation of the Euro 2008 fan zone in Vienna during the semi-final match between Germany and Turkey.

The APA news agency reported that the fans were injured in a stampede-like flight of around 30,000 people as gale-force winds and lightning hit the Austrian capital midway through the second half of the game, which was played in Basle, Switzerland.

Heavy rain continued past midnight (2200 GMT) in Vienna.

The extreme weather led to the evacuation of the international Euro 2008 media centre in Vienna and apparently caused the blackout in the international television feed of the game.

The ruling body UEFA said that only news channel Al-Jazeera and Swiss TV were able to continue their broadcasts.

Vienna will host Thursday's semi-final between Spain and Russia and also the Euro final on Sunday. (dpa)
