London - Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz launched a furious attack Wednesday on Real Madrid over their attempts to sign winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
Madrid have made little secret of their desire to sign the Portugal international, with manager Bernd Schuster speaking in some detail of how he plans to use him.
United have threatened to report Madrid to Fifa over their conduct, but Queiroz's attack was still extraordinary, as he first likened Ronaldo to a disputed town on the Spain-Portugal border, and then spoke of explorer Christopher Columbus - who is claimed by both nations - and Spain's 60-year rule over Portugal, which came to an end in 1640.
"Cristiano Ronaldo will never be Spanish! As they will never take Olivenca again," he said.
"They already did the same with Christopher Columbus, and it now seems they want to naturalize Cristiano Ronaldo.
"Have they already forgotten what we did to them in the past? We will never lose our patience.
"It's being done in a manner to distract the Portugal team, at the height of their preparations for the European Championships.
"But I am convinced that despite pressure from the Spanish sporting press he will not accept to change his nationality.
"However, it is an attack with a well-defined strategy and Portugal should be worried about that." (dpa)
