Melbourne, Jan. 23 : Five-time champion Serena Williams fell in straight sets to unseeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova - 6-2 6-3 in the pre-quarter-final of this year's Australian Open on Monday.
The 23-year-old''s victory has given her a first career grand slam quarterfinal appearance, The Age reports.
She took four match points before sealing the fourth-round clash.
Williams, 30, had won 41 of her past 43 matches at Melbourne Park and was favoured to go deep into the event.
But she was confounded by the Russian''s power hitting and was continually moved from side to side at difficult angles.
"I don''t know what to say. It''s an amazing feeling, my first time in the quarterfinals," the paper quoted Makarova, as saying after her shock win. "
"She''s an unbelievable player and it''s great to play against her," said Serena.(ANI)
